Community Action Nepal Everest 1975 Sweatshirt
This sweatshirt is available for a limited time in honour of the 1975 British South-West Face team which put the first British subjects on the summit of Everest. In doing so this difficult face was climbed for the very first time. This was a bold audacious attempt, which although was successful was also tinged with tragedy when team member Mick Burke disappeared after it is largely assumed he reached the summit.
In the days when it was perfectly acceptable to smoke, drink beer and whiskey whilst on an expedition, these guys still climbed the mountain. And did so via an unclimbed and difficult route as detailed in Chris Bonington's pivotal expedition account - Everest: The Hard Way.
One of those expedition members who reached the top that day in September 1975 was Doug Scott. Doug was recently diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and is confined to his home in the English Lake District.
Doug set up the charity Community Action Nepal (CAN) in 1997 to improve the standard of living in remote Himalayan communities and give something back to the mountain people who had helped him to achieve his mountaineering goals.
Sir Chris Bonington, who led the 1975 SW Face Everest expedition and is one of CAN’s patrons, has said of Doug that “his mountaineering achievements pale alongside his creation of Community Action Nepal and the schools, hostels, health clinics and porter rescue shelters it has built and sustained over 25 years for the people of the high Himalayas”.
Every penny of profit from the sale of one of these limited sweatshirts is being donated to CAN and their ongoing work to support the high village communities of the Himalayas.
Doug and Chris recently started a special Everest challenge in which they are asking people to join in. All the details on this and where the money goes including money from the sale of this tribute t-shirt can be found here https://www.canepal.org.uk/everest2020
Available now for a limited amount of time. The sweatshirt is an organic 85% ring-spun cotton, by the brand Stella and Stanley. The hoodie features names on the rear of some of the members of this iconic world-first expedition including:
